It’s Monday, 11:14 PM, and I’m lying on my living room floor, not on the sofa, specifically on the floor, which is where I always end up when a conversation has gone on for four hours and I’ve stopped caring about posture. My phone is still warm from the call I just ended with Shekhar, who moved to Pune two years ago and somehow gets funnier with distance. We talked about nothing important: a meme, a mutual friend’s new job, whether pav bhaji counts as a complete meal (it does, obviously), an old college memory that we’ve probably retold fifteen times but it’s still hilarious every time.
I hung up laughing. Then just lay here for a while.
My headphones are still in. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil came on shuffle the title track, slow and a little aching and I thought: this song is actually about a very specific kind of friendship that crosses a line and becomes complicated. Ranbir’s character has one of those. I’ve never had one exactly like that, but I know the feeling of someone becoming so much of your life that you forget where the friendship ends and the dependency begins.
Anyway.
The best friendships are the ones that make four hours feel like forty minutes and silence feel like a full conversation.

Yesterday I wrote about gratitude quotes and several readers mentioned that the most specific gratitude they felt was for a specific persona best friend, a childhood best friend, a work friend who became family. So here we are. These friendship quotes are for all of them.
Why Friendship Quotes Hit Different
There’s a reason friendship is the plot of almost every story worth telling. Frodo and Sam. Jai, Akbar and Anthony. The crew in Dil Chahta Hai. Naruto and Sasuke (I know, I know it’s complicated, but it’s also the most central relationship in that whole series). Friendship is how we learn what we’re worth to someone who has no obligation to think we’re worth anything.
Research out of Brigham Young University found in a 2010 study that people with strong social relationships have a 50% higher chance of survival over time more than exercise, more than quitting smoking. A 2023 study in PLOS One found that people who reported having a best friend at work were 7 times more likely to be engaged and productive. The American Psychological Association has consistently linked social connection to lower cortisol levels, improved immune function, and better mental health outcomes across age groups.
Loneliness, by contrast, is now classified by public health institutions as a health epidemic. The U.K. appointed a Minister of Loneliness in 2018. That’s how serious this is.
Good friends aren’t a luxury. They’re structure. They’re survival.

Okay not a friendship quote exactly, but Alfred makes Bruce what he is. The whole film is a portrait of mentorship that becomes friendship. Alfred said something close to this back to him. The loyalty in that relationship is the most underrated part of Nolan’s trilogy.

Sometimes a songwriter captures in one line what a whole book struggles to say.

The Science of Friendship (Keep It Short)
Strong social bonds increase survival odds by 50% (BYU, 2010). Having a best friend at work makes someone 7x more likely to be engaged in what they do (Gallup/PLOS One, 2023). Oxytocin the bonding hormone spikes during positive social interactions, reducing cortisol and lowering blood pressure. A 2021 Harvard study tracking people over 80+ years found that the quality of relationships at age 50 was the single strongest predictor of health and happiness at 80. Not income. Not status. Relationships.
My approach to maintaining friendships imperfect but real:
- Monthly: Actually schedule the call. Don’t just say let’s talk soon.
- On birthdays: More than a message call, or send something specific to them.
- When something reminded me of them: Tell them. Don’t just think it.
- When things are hard for them: Show up in whatever way I can, even if it’s just texting I’m thinking about you at 10 PM.
- Once a year minimum: See them in person. Non-negotiable.
The key: friendship is a verb. You have to keep doing it.
How to Actually Maintain Great Friendships
Friendships don’t die dramatically, they fade quietly. Here’s how to keep them:
- Reach out when you have nothing to report. The just thinking about you texts matter more than the update texts.
- Remember the small things they told you. If they mentioned a job interview, follow up. That’s it. That’s the whole trick.
- Stop waiting for the perfect time to visit. There is no perfect time. Book the train.
- Be the one who reaches out first sometimes. Reciprocity matters, but so does initiative.
- Tell them directly what they mean to you. Not just in a toast at a wedding on a random Tuesday.
Also: gratitude quotes and friendship overlap completely. The best thing you can do for a friendship is express specific gratitude for it.
The Friends I Grew Up With in Books
Malgudi Days gave me my first understanding of how friendships form between children, sudden, inexplicable, completely loyal. Narayan’s characters don’t analyze their bonds; they just live inside them. The Swami stories are really friendship stories in disguise.
And then there’s Difficult Daughters by Manju Kapur where Virmati’s friendships with women around her shape her in ways her romantic relationships never could. The complexity of female friendship in partition-era India, the silences, the unspoken loyalties and betrayalsKapur doesn’t simplify any of it. It stuck with me.
Literature keeps making the same argument: the people who walk beside you become part of who you are. Deliberately or accidentally. In the middle of Malgudi or in the rubble of partition. In a Pune apartment or on a phone call at 11 PM about absolutely nothing.
Bonus: Five Types of Friends Everyone Needs
You need the friend who celebrates your wins louder than you do the one who is never threatened by your success.
You need the friend who tells you the truth when everyone else is nodding the one who cares more about you than about your comfort.
You need the friend who’s been with you long enough to know your history the one whose context of you is decades deep.
You need the friend you met recently who sees only who you are now the one who knew you after the growing, not during.
And you need the friend who would absolutely, without question, help you move a couch at 9 PM on a weekday. That one is irreplaceable.
Coming Back to the Living Room Floor
It’s 11:52 PM now. I’m still on the floor. Moved onto my back at some point staring at the ceiling fan which is doing its thing. The call with Shekhar ended almost an hour ago but I’m still sort of in it, that warm, slightly drowsy state a really good conversation leaves you in.
I should go to sleep. I have things to do tomorrow. I am not going to sleep yet.
Here’s what four hours on the phone taught me tonight, which I already knew but forgot: the best friendships don’t demand energy. They return it. You hang up feeling more like yourself, not less. More capable. More seen.A great friendship doesn’t complete you it reminds you that you were already whole, and makes being whole a lot more fun.
Text your best friend something tonight. Not because this post told you to. Because you thought of them while reading it, and you haven’t said it out loud in a while. Say it.
Which friendship quote are you sending to your best friend right now?

Drop it in the comments or better yet, just send it to them directly. They already know why.
And if you enjoyed these, you’d probably like Monday motivation quotes for the friend who needs a push, or quotes about personal growth for the friend who’s in the middle of becoming.

P.S. Shekhar, if you’re reading this because I sent you the linkyes, this is embarrassing and no I’m not deleting it. Also you still owe me from that bet in 2019. You know which one.
